Whie has a rook and pawn for two pieces, and Black is looking for counterplay. His next move is a blunder: 38...Bd2??. It is clear that 39.Rxd2 doesn't work, because of 39...Qxf4 40.Qxf4 Re1+. But White has 39.Qg4+ and the game is virtually over. 39...Kh7 40.Qh5+ Kg8 41.Qg6+ Rg7 42.Qe8+ Nf8 43.Rxf6 Qe7 44.Qxf8+ Qxf8 45.Rxf8+ Kxf8 46.Rxd2 Ke7 47.g3 Kd6 48.Kg2 b5 49.h4 Kd5 50.Kh3 bxa4 51.h5 Ke4 52.Kh4 Rd7 53.g4 c5 54.d5 c4 55.Rc2 Kd4 56.h6 a3 57.bxa3 c3 58.g5 Kd3.

Black is desperately seeking counterplay, probably dreaming of something like 29.bxc3 Rxf5 30.Bxf5 Qxc3=. But White does not allow himself to be distracted: 29.Nxe5. Good enough, though 29.Nxg5 with the treath of 30.Nh7+ was more forceful. 29...Rc7 30.Qxg5 Qxg5 31.Ng6+ Qxg6 32.fxg6 Nxd5 33.gxf7 Nf4

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bf5 5.Nc3 e6 6.Nh4 Bg6 7.Nxg6 hxg6 8.Bd2 Nbd7 9.Rc1 a6 10.b3 Bb4 11.g3 Bxc3 12.Bxc3 Ne4 13.Bg2 Nxc3 14.Rxc3 Qe7 15.h4 g5 16.hxg5 Rxh1+ 17.Bxh1 Qxg5 18.Qc1 Nf6? (missing the following combination) 19.cxd5 cxd5 20.Rc8+ Rxc8 21.Qxc8+ Ke7 22.Qxb7+ Ke8 23.Qc8+ Ke7 24.Qb7+ Ke8 25.Qc8+ Ke7 26.Qxa6

White is two (distant passed) pawns up and should have no difficulty winning. Cheparinov finds an interesting plan: sacrifice the knight for three pawns and challenge the opponent to win. Qf5 27.Qa3+ Ke8 28.Qb2 Ng4 29.Bg2 Nxf2 30.Qxf2 Qb1+ 31.Ke2 Qxa2+ 32.Kf3 Qxb3. Now White has almost a hundred moves of work ahead of him. 33.Bf1 Qb1 34.Kg2 Kf8 35.Qe2 Qc1 36.Kf2 Qb1 37.Qd3 Qb2+ 38.Be2 g6 39.Kg1 Kg7 40.Bd1 Qb4 41.Kg2 Qe7 42.Qe2 Qg5 43.Bc2 Qd8 44.Qf2 Qc7 45.g4 Kg8 46.Qe2 Kg7 47.Bd3 Qc3 48.Qc2 Qa3 49.Qd2 Qb3 50.Bc2 Qa3 51.Qf2 Qc3 52.g5 Kg8 53.Bd1 Qd3 54.Bg4 Qc3 55.Kg3 Qc1 56.Be2 Qc3 57.Kf3 Qc2 58.Qh4 Qb1 59.Kf2 Qb2 60.Qh2 Qc2 61.Qh3 Kg7 62.Qf3 Kg8 63.Kg3 Qb1 64.Qf1 Qe4 65.Qf2 Qb1 66.Bf1 Qb8+ 67.Kg2 Qb1 68.Kh3 Qd1 69.Qe2 Qb1 70.Qf3 Qb3 71.Ba6 Qb1 72.Kg2 Qc2+ 73.Qf2 Qb1 74.Kg3 Qb8+ 75.Qf4 Qb1 76.Qf1 Qb8+ 77.Kh3 Qb3 78.Bd3 Qc3 79.Qe2 Kg7 80.Kg4 Qc1 81.Bc2 Qb2 82.Qd1 Qc3 83.Bd3 Qb2 84.Qc2 Qa3 85.Qb1 Qc3 86.Kf3 Qc7 87.Qc2 Qb8 88.Kg4 Kh7 89.Kh3 Kg7 90.Qf2 Kg8 91.Kg4 Qa8 92.Qc2 Qa1? Better was 92...Qa3, indirectly attacking the e-pawns and not allowing the following tactical shot.

After sixty moves of relatively fruitless maneuvering White gets an opportunity for a breakthrough: 93.Bxg6 Qg1+ 94.Kf4 Qf1+ 95.Ke5 Qh3 96.Kf6 Qh8+ 97.Ke7 Kg7 98.Bd3 Qb8 99.Qc6 Qa7+ 100.Kd8 Qb8+ 101.Kd7 Qa7+ 102.Qc7 Qa4+ 103.Qc6 Qa7+ 104.Kc8 Qa3 105.Qc2 Qa8+ 106.Kc7 Qa5+ 107.Kb7 Qe1 108.Qe2 Qb4+ 109.Ka6 Qa4+ 110.Kb6 Qb4+ 111.Bb5 Kg6 112.Qd3+ Kxg5 113.Kc6 Kf6 114.e4 dxe4 115.Qxe4 Qc3+ 116.Kd7 Qg3 117.Be2 Kg5 118.Ke8 Qf4 119.Qd3 Kf6?

Black has been hanging on for dear life, but the last move gives it all up. 120.Qf3 Kg5 121.Qh5+ Kf6 122.Qxf7+ Kg5 123.Qe7+ (naturally not 123.Wxf4+ Kxf4 and the last white pawn is lost) 123...Kf5 124.Bd3+ Kg4 125.Qxe6+ and White will force a queen exchange on his next move while keeping his final pawn safe for promotion. 1-0.

Inarkiev-Cheparinov : as negras "tiraram da cartola" uma novidade ao 11º lance...

Inarkiev,E (2669) - Cheparinov,I (2696) [B90]
FIDE Grand Prix Elista RUS (5), 18.12.2008
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Be3 e6 7.Be2 Nbd7 8.f4 b5 9.f5 Ne5 10.fxe6 fxe6 11.0-0 Bd7 12.a4 bxa4 13.Nxa4 Be7 14.Nb3 Rb8 15.Nc3 0-0 16.Rxa6 Qc8

White is doing fine and the game could continue with 17.Rxd6 and many very interesting tactical possibilities arise. But Inarkiev chose a more passive strategy: 17.Ra7 Rb4 18.Rf4 Qb8 19.Ra1 Ng6 20.Rf3 Nxe4 21.Nxe4 Rxe4 22.Nc5 dxc5 23.Qxd7 Nh4 24.Rxf8+ Bxf8

White can give up his hopes of winning, and after 25.Bc4? he is on the road to disaster. 25...Rxe3 26.Bxe6+ Kh8 27.Qf7 Bd6. We can only speculate whether Inarkiev overlooked the refutation of 28.Ra7. Black defends with 28...Nf5 and now 29.Bxf5 is impossible owing to 29...Bxh2+ 30.Kf2 Qf4#. The game ended 28.Bd5 Bxh2+ 29.Kf2 Re8 0-1.

Gashimov,V (2703) - Grischuk,A (2719) [B97]
FIDE Grand Prix Elista RUS (5), 18.12.2008
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bg5 e6 7.f4 Qb6 8.Qd3 Qxb2 9.Rb1 Qa3 10.f5 Be7 11.fxe6 fxe6 12.Be2 Qa5 13.Bd2 Qc7 14.0-0 0-0 15.Qc4 Qd7 16.Qb3 Kh8 17.Bc4 d5 18.exd5 b5 19.Be2 Bc5 20.Kh1 exd5 21.Be3 Nc6 22.Ne6 Qxe6 23.Bxc5 Re8 24.Bf3 Bb7 25.a4 Na5 26.Qb4 Nc4 27.Rbd1 Ne4 28.Nxe4 dxe4 29.Be2 e3 30.axb5 axb5 31.Qxb5 Ba6 32.Qb4 Rab8 33.Qa4 Ra8 34.Qb4 Nd2 35.Rfe1 Ne4 36.Kg1 Rab8 37.Qd4

This is one for our collection of "my-how-the-tide-can-turn" positions: Black has excellent winning chances with 37...Bxe2 38.Rxe2 Qc6, but he plays a more aggressive looking line and falls into trouble: 37...Nf2 38.Ra1 Bxe2 39.Rxe2 Ng4 40.h3 Ne5. Now, just four moves later it is White who is calling all the shots. 41.Rxe3 Rbd8 42.Qc3 Qc4 43.Qxc4 Nxc4 44.Rxe8+. White has a healthy passed pawn, which Gashimov uses effectively to obtain the full point: 44...Rxe8 45.Ra7 h6 46.Bd4 Ne5 47.c4 Kh7 48.c5 h5 49.Ra6 Nd3 50.Ra3 Nf4 51.Be3 Nd5 52.Kf2 Re4 53.Rd3 Nxe3 54.Rxe3 Rc4 55.Re5 Rc2+ 56.Kf3 h4 57.Ke4 Kg6 58.Kd5 Rd2+ 59.Ke6 Rxg2 60.c6 Rc2 61.Kd6 Kf6 62.Rd5 g5 63.c7 g4 64.Rc5 1-0.

FIDE Grand Prix 2008 - Elista 2008 - Ronda 4

.

Bacrot,E (2705) - Leko,P (2747) [B19]
FIDE Grand Prix Elista RUS (4), 17.12.2008
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5 5.Ng3 Bg6 6.h4 h6 7.Nf3 Nd7 8.h5 Bh7 9.Bd3 Bxd3 10.Qxd3 e6 11.Bf4 Qa5+ 12.Bd2 Bb4 13.c3 Be7 14.c4 Qc7 15.0-0-0 Ngf6 16.Ne4 0-0 17.g4 Nxg4 18.Qe2 f5 19.Rdg1 Rae8 20.Ne1 e5 21.Ng3 exd4

Black certainly stands better (he is two pawns up), and White is forced to take drastic steps: 22.Nxf5 Rxf5 23.Qxg4 Rf7. 23...Rg5 24.Bxg5 Bxg5+ 25.Kb1 Ne5 26.Qf5 Nxc4 was an alternative to consider. 24.Bxh6 Bf6 25.Bd2 Ne5 26.Qe2 d3 27.Qe4 Qb6 28.b3 Qc5 29.h6 Qa3+ 30.Kd1. The tides have turned and White's position is now better. Black's next move is a blunder: 30...Qxa2??

Deixo agora consigo a tarefa de encontrar o lance de Bacrot que levou ao imediato abandono de Leko.

O Francês GM Etienne Bacrot...

... o ex-candidato ao título mundial Peter Leko (da Hungria)

Descobriram a jogada do jogo Bacrot-Leko acima ?

31.Qh7+!! Leko abandonou, há mate em 4 lances ! 31...Kxh7 32.hxg7+ Bh4 33.Rxh4+ Kg8 34.Rh8 mate; or 31...Kf8 32.Bb4+ c5 33.Bxc5+ Rfe7 34.hxg7+ Kf7 35.g8Q mate.
